MICR toner carries iron oxide so that the numbers along the bottom of a check can be read by the magnetic readers banks use to sort and clear them. Standard black toner looks identical to the eye but will not be picked up reliably by those readers. If you print checks in house on a laser printer, the cartridge has to be a MICR version.
MICR Cartridges by Printer Family
Most MICR cartridges reuse the part number of the standard cartridge for the same printer, so a CB436A MICR, a C8061X MICR or a 92275A MICR drops into the same machine as its regular counterpart. Apple LaserWriter owners will find M5893G and M2437G/A style numbers instead. Match the number on your existing cartridge and you are in the right place.
