MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) toner contains iron oxide so that the numbers along the bottom of a cheque can be read magnetically by bank sorting equipment. Standard laser toner will print a cheque that looks correct but will not be machine readable, which is why MICR is sold as a separate cartridge line.
HP MICR Part Numbers
HP MICR cartridges carry the same base part number as the standard cartridge with MICR appended -- this category includes the 92274A, 92275A, 92291A and 92295A, plus the C3900A, C3903A, C3906A, C3909A, C4092A and C4096A in MICR form. If you know the standard cartridge your printer takes, look for the same number here.
